A couple of things.

I have bought the domain name

iamryanterry.com

and linked it to the 3blocksfromj blog. This means nothing to the readers except when you go to 3blocksfromj.blogspot.com it will re-direct you to iamryanterry.com. If you bookmark my blog, or if you just remember the URL and type it in to check on it, just type in the new address at iamryanterry.com and re-bookmark or remember the new site. This change is to make the blog a little easier to remember, and a little more official. In the near future I will be starting a new blog that is more professional photography oriented and less "i live in nyc and this is my daily life" type of blog. This transition to the new site will allow me to switch blogs easier and un-noticed to the reader.

This brings me to something else. I will be starting a new blog because, again, my situations are changing and I will no longer be living 3 blocks from the J train. I will be moving to Rochester, NY at the end of May and starting to do freelance photography work with my fiance Bethany. I have been keeping busy.

Work is normal. DUMBO is getting nicer in the spring and the harsh winds near the waterfront have died down. There is a flea market next door every weekend and street venders selling good food. People come in and I talk about computers all day. Occasionally there is a ping pong match.

Brian came to the city last week and we hung out a bit. We went to all the locations where Flight of the Conchords films and geeked out. Above is the pawn shop where Dave works in the show. Below is the New Zealand Consulate where the guys visit a lot.

We spent a bunch of time in China Town eating amazing 1 dollar dumplings and watching things happen. There is a new Nicholas Cage movie filming on Eldridge St. Its called "The Sorcerers Apprentice." I hear its based on that scene of "Fantasia" where mickey is a wizard. Hmm... We will see. My guess is that somehow Nick Cage will be carrying around a flashlight. He does in every movie he's in. Check. Im serious.

Bethany and I hung out in the DUMBO park near the two bridges last night and had a picnic. We listened to records and had chips and salsa. It was a perfect night too... 80 Degrees at 9pm. Awesome.

I stumbled on a neat Digg.com article that listed a few really cool fonts for free. If you design things or do a lot of typography, they can come in handy. Click HERE for link.

This is my current logo font...

Its ARIAL font with 100% letter spacing. Black with orange "Terry" on a white background. I like this font a lot but I found one I like a little bit better called Quicksand I have used Quicksand lite with a 90% spacing between the letters on black and white backgrounds with different color letter combinations.

Well.... I just tested the limits of my computer editing a 2GB file in Photoshop.
A couple weeks ago I toted my camera and tripod over to Hoboken and set up to do a panoramic of the NYC skyline. There is an amazing view from the Jersey shore and I wanted to capture it. It took me a few hours of stitching somewhere around 16 hi-res photos together in Photoshop and Im finally done. It took a few tries to whittle this enormous file down to a manageable size for you to view online at home. Who wants to sit at their computer for an hour while my image loads? What is this 1998? Anyways...

Spring Cleaning

Hey all, the past couple days have been busy! My good friend and roomate Sam has moved out of the apartment so I have taken his room. I now have a window. You never realize how mess your room REALLY is until you try to move all your stuff. Before I moved my things I took some pictures of the mess its become over the past few months.

While I was finishing disinfecting my computer screen and put everything in place in my new room I recruited the help of my other roomates to clean up the rest of the house a little bit. We are all a bit busy and sometimes the mess just seems to overtake us!

Another exciting bit of news, I got corporate sponsorship from the Johnston and Johnston company, MGM, and Viacom!
So you will be seeing ads for such companies and subsidiaries in every following blog. Since the income I'm receiving from the sponsorships is basically leaving me with millions while the rest of the country suffers the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression, I have done my part to create jobs by outsourcing my writings to local authors who have seen declining book sales.

APEX, N.C. - A North Carolina family's dog didn't eat the children's homework, he ate mom's money.

Kelley Davis said she had an extra $400 in cash to deposit after working extra hours as a physical therapist. She told the News & Observer of Raleigh that on Friday she planned to deposit the money, but it wasn't in her pocket.

She remembered leaving it in the bedroom and it occurred to her that the family's 2-year-old greater Swiss mountain dog, Augie, might have eaten it. Davis, 42, said when she took Augie for a walk Saturday, she found parts of three $100 bills and five $20s in his leavings. She washed them with a garden hose and hopes to find enough pieces to exchange them for cash.

A professor at the North Carolina State University Veterinary School said the money shouldn't hurt the dog.

Ok, so here's some fanboy gushing. A band that I have truly enjoyed over the past few years, Mute Math, released a new EP in anticipation to their upcoming sophomore album. I'd like to start out by saying that it has exceeded my already high expectations of the bands new studio record which is TBD. Their first album, self titled, debuted over 4 years ago and took off in a way you wouldn't expect from a band new to the scene. Since then they have been touring and working on a second album. If you listen to their music and see their videos its apparent that they are very much perfectionists, almost to a fault, as their new album was almost done- and they scrapped it because it wasnt "good enough" and started over.

Now after just (finally) finishing their second record they have released an EP. Which you can get on iTunes or HERE. Since I got it I have been unable to stop listening to it. The entire 4 track EP flows together perfectly and mixes sounds and melodies with the other songs on it.

Unfortunately the band keeps things pretty locked down so there is no free sample song that I can post...but its definitely worth checking out.

We also got to go to the Natural History Museum for a day! Unfortunately the fourth floor dinosaur exhibit was closed off because Ugly Betty was filming there. Thats annoying. I hope its worth it... I REALLY wanted to see the dinos. At least Ugly Betty is better that Ben Stiller filming Night at the Museum 4 or whatever. Oh brother.

At least there were a couple of dinosaurs in the main lobby... it wasnt a complete bust. Just kidding. The rest of the place was really sweet. I liked it a lot.

Greetings from the future! I woke up this morning and found that I had been transported an hour into the future. In the future the sun takes longer to rise and set. Other than that, the future isn't much different. Oh, the economy is still terrible in the future too. Let's work on that ok?

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the invention of the Compact Disk. Hurray for technology! Speaking of anniversarys, Bethany and I started dating a year ago this tuesday. It seems like it's gone so fast. Here's to many more.

It's been really nice weather here in NY these past few days which has been a welcome change. Last night Bethany and I hung out in the park in Hoboken overlooking Manhattan and listened to all the drunkies celebrating st. Patricks day. Hoboken is crazy on st. Patricks day. I got off the path and was met with a police
Barricade holding people back from going in the station until the incoming train emptied. The streets were filled with trash and people that couldn't fit in the alredy crowded bar. And that was only at 6 pm.

Crazy times. The future is upon us.

This is a video of what Microsoft is hoping the year 2019 will look like. Strange I dont see any branding on these sweet devices. Maybe in ten years companies wont slap their logo all over everything? (I do think its funny that the car that drives by in the background has a brand logo on the side. Perhaps advertisements will be on automobiles?) Nonetheless this looks sweet. I want to live in 2019 NOW if this is what it will be like. How fun! I think the e-paper idea is cool. I wouldn't mind getting the paper in the morning and having a new touchscreen video display to play around with. Newspapers implementing slideshows and video clips? Nice. I think the digital wallet with electronic credit cards and ID's would be cool but hard to implement.

I found this iPod in the electronics recycling bin. It was busted but I managed to get it working (Save for the TERRIBLE battery life of 5 minutes on full charge.) I ordered a new battery for like, 11 bucks and Im going to try to fix it up!
I miss these iPods a lot. Its very heavy and rounder unlike the new thinner sharp-edged ones. I like it. Classic.

I recently discovered the performance art/photogrpahy of Li Wei. Reigning from Beijing, this 39 year old artist creates images that defy gravity and intuition using a series of wires, mirrors, scaffolding, and acrobatics. The images look stunning and become even more impressive knowing that he did not use digital editing, photoshop, or any kind of post production at all.

A few days ago Bethany and I went to Ikea in Red Hook Brooklyn just to see it. Its supposed to be this enormous beast-of-a-store with every kind of furnature/design combination know to man (or something...) We walked in Manhattan to Pier 11 to get on the Ferry to Red Hook.

Well hello.

I know that its been a while and I apologize for that. I have been busy working and planning the wedding and my future. Since my last post I have been playing around with my 50mm lens more and more. Sam, Bethany, Karinna, and I took a day trip to Staten Island and I took a couple dozen Polaroid photos. Im planning on doing a special kind of "digital art project" with them and making a horizontal scrolling (perhaps interactive) site. I have been photographing and planning some personal shoots lately and cant wait to get going again.

Additionally, I am in the midst of re-designing the blog to fit a widescreen format for bigger photos. If you are looking for the links to my friends blogs, its at the bottom of the page. Just scroll down. My blog archives are down there too.

Yesterday was Valentines Day. Bethany made us a GREAT meal and we were able to hang out despite our busy work schedules. She is a wonderful and beautiful woman and Im very in love with her. Check out her amazing photography HERE.

The photos below are a couple of the digital shots I took in Staten Island. Most of the photos were Polaroids and, like I said, Im working on some kind of project with them. When we were walking around, we found a trail that led to this amazing desolate field that was all burnt up. The clouds and the sunset were perfectly orchestrated.

On Thursday Bethany had a photo assignment in downtown so afterwards

we went to the harbor to check it out.

To brush up on our photographic skills we took turns photographing each other

using the beautiful sunlight that day. It was warm too!

I played around with my 50mm lens to see what kind of neat portraits I could do.

With the limited DOF and manual focus I was able to come up with some cool

uses for the sun as natural lighting.

Despite the sun being out we got cold and went inside one of the shops to have some

soup for lunch. It was lovely and the view was amazing.

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the Apple Macintosh computer.

Its a Personal Computer that revolutionized the industry. It was

the first computer to use a mouse and a cursor icon to navigate

and the first u ser interface to use actual visuals rather than just text

in a command console. It retailed in 1984 for $2,495. it featured a 8Mhz

processor and no hard drive- only floppy disk support. It came with

128Kb ram with a maximum upgrade of 4Mb and the built in monitor

was 9 inches.

Ring Flash

The other night was super snowy and Will and Bethany came over for some ring flash fun. Will had rented a ringflash (round flash that goes around the cameras lens. creates virtually shadowless photos that look pretty cool.) We synched a regular flash to fire with the ring and act as a background light- giving us a flood of pure white light and no shadows. We had some spaghetti and photographed each other in my hallway and living room.

I have some pretty awesome news. My lovely lovely girlfriend Bethany and I are officially engaged! I flew to Minnesota to surprise her because she wanted to be with me on new years eve. I got in to Fargo ND pretty late that night and her dad drove me from the airport. She was watching a movie in the basement with her mom and I just walked down as if it were normal. She was pretty surprised and excited about me being there and we talked for a while. I told her some things and got down on one knee, gave her the ring, and asked her to marry me.

She obviously said yes.

So we spent new years eve and new years day showing all her friends and calling everyone to tell them. We are just absolutely pumped! I added some photos below from the week!

Hey,

Sad news about one of my favorite magazines. JPGmag has officially folded under the weight of this recession and gone out of business. It was a magazine/social networking website that displayed subscriber images in themes. I belonged and sent in photos. I had some friends on the site and received the publication in the mail.

The good that comes out of this is that a PDF downloads of EVERY issue, Photo story, and outtake are available HERE. I quickly snatched up every one. If you want them, or only a couple that appeal to you, please go check them out. The articles are great and the photos are amazing. Its shutting down in a couple days so go fast!

Here is the official story.

Today is a particularly sad day for all of us at JPG and 8020 Media.

We've spent the last few months trying to make the business behind JPG sustain itself, and we've reached the end of the line. We all deeply believe in everything JPG represents, but we just weren't able to raise the money needed to keep JPG alive in these extraordinary economic times. We sought out buyers, spoke with numerous potential investors, and pitched several last-ditch creative efforts, all without success. As a result, jpgmag.com will shut down on Monday, January 5, 2009.

The one thing we've been the most proud of: your amazing talent. We feel honored and humbled to have been able to share jpgmag.com with such a dynamic, warm, and wonderful community of nearly 200,000 photographers. The photography on the website and in the magazine was adored by many, leaving no doubt that this community created work of the highest caliber. The kindness, generosity, and support shared among members made it a community in the truest sense of the word, and one that we have loved being a part of for these past two years.

We wish we could have found a way to leave the site running for the benefit of the amazing folks who have made JPG what it is, and we have spent sleepless nights trying to figure something out, all to no avail. Some things you may want to do before the site closes:

This year

Its been a year.

I started dating Bethany almost a year ago, I graduated Hallmark, my photography has improved greatly, I moved to New York City and started working a couple jobs....Its been crazy.

Hallmark was cool. I learned a lot of cool things and found a style that I like. I learned a lot of techniques and an eye for lighting that have helped me gather new ideas and skills after school with an instinct for design and style. I started photographing weddings with Bethany and have a lot of photographic plans to develop and look forward to. I traded in the camera I used in school for a pretty sweet light kit that has come in handy and allowed me to do more with my photographs. Im lucky to have that.

Bethany and I started dating in mid March and it has been great. She is wonderful and takes beautiful photos. Its been so awesome getting to know the city and exploring together. Finding places to eat after I get out of work, taking the boat to staten island, getting lost on trains, finding jobs, central park in the summer... Good times. She is home in MN for the holiday and I miss her.

I found a job in September after a lame summer of looking for work and getting rejected every day. Shortly after I started with one place, another that I had applied at during the summer, called me looking for assistant work. After no luck all summer I found myself with too much work. I worked from the beginning of September to mid December at two jobs - seven days a week - with only two and a half days off. One of them I was sick, one of them Bethany was sick, and the other was thanksgiving. It was crazy. Darn it people! Sympathize with me!

We moved here in July and its been awesome hanging out with Sam, Karinna, Bethany, Ashley, and other friends but recently one of my closest friends Ashley moved. It was pretty sad. You will be missed- best of luck in the windy city.

Some friends came to visit me, Brian and Alex stayed with me for a few days, Danielle, Heather, Maria, Jess, Adam, matty, (and hopefully nobody else that Im forgetting...) were in town and met up with me. After new years, Ben and Mark are visiting and I cant wait. It should be a fun time of seeing the city (the only time I EVER go to times square is when a friend is visiting...)
Also, special thanks to my family for coming to visit me on Thanksgiving... I only had that day off so going home was not an option...If they didnt come I would end up just sleeping all day...

Hello,

It was good seeing you Rochester folk this past week! I hung out at home and saw the whole family and al my friends. I went out for a Garbage Plate on Monday night (after a cavalcade of airport delays) at 2 in the morning. Best time to go. The next day I hung out with other friends all day and went to Nicks house with Ben, Mark, and Jeff. After a quick Christmas eve day brunch at dennys I went home and did the traditional Christmas eve festivities.

Christmas was good and I got to see the whole family.

I didn't get a Wii....I dont really need one. But here is a compilation video of children opening their new Nintendo Wiis this christmas.

Hey folks!

Exciting news! Bethany and I have started to join forces in photographing weddings and other things of the sort.

This is a something that we have been working through to decide the intricacies of the style we want to develop and how we'll present ourselves to clients. With one wedding together under our belts we hope to develop an interesting and broad client base located anywhere people get married. We are mixing the ideals of classic photography with the interest and style of a more modern photography duo in our latest endeavor, Joy Wedding Photography.

In the coming weeks I am going to work with Bethany to construct a beautiful website demonstrating our work and the type of design we appreciate. For the time I made a place holder site that will give the basic gist of what we are all about. Check it out, keep going back (ill update here,) and give feed back along the way.

Ok. Really? I mean.... Seriously? In a recent study it was discovered that 37% of Americans could not locate America on a map.

I guess I shouldn't be, but Im absolutely dumbfounded at these numbers! If you put one hundred Americans in front of a map only 63 people can locate America? My favorite dumb answers to the location of our country, as noted in the article, are as follows.

pinpointed the word "America" at the top of the map instead of the actual country.
where mexico would be if it were on the map provided...
and... Iraq. "That thing definitely looked familiar, And my gut told me there were probably a whole bunch of Americans there. So I had to go with 'Iraq.'"
"a place to definitely explore when I finally get my passport"
And of course... "the best state of all the Unites States"

"I live in the U.S.A., so why would I need to know where America is? Or the United States for that matter?"

Are you kidding me? The above quote is spoken from an Ohio Arbys employee obviously with better things to do than study the location of her own country or even know the difference between "America" and "the United States of America."

What blows my mind even more is the inability to even vaguely recognize the SHAPE of your country to give it a good educated guess. How would someone go through their life never seeing a map of the United States? Not on a wall at a school? Or on a pamphlet? Never in a store or library or post office? Its never come up in conversation? No? You dont ever leave your house?

"Personally, I believe if fewer people in this world could spot America on a map, we'd have a much better chance of avoiding national tragedies like 9/11," said Chertoff. "You can't attack a country you can't find."

Seriously. The thought came into my head that so many people disapprove of President Bush and think he is a complete moron...Like him or not, we are not discussing that....but its downright disgusting that people who are proclaiming his shortcomings are the ones who cant find their own country on a map? Im sure there are some from both parties but its horrifying! There should be a pop quiz mandatory for an individual to exercise their right to vote. Point to America on a map.

Although casting a large superiority complex on the way I will undoubtedly look at the rest of the country from now on, its hardly fair to stereotype all Americans as people who could care less about their place in the world (or even geographical location.) There is still that 63% that can! Thats more than half!

It is just disappointing that some folks cant complete a simple task like knowing what their country looks like. We are not talking about knowing the ins and outs of how the governments infrastructure works or dismantling atomic bombs. You probably dont need to know all the different tiers of the nations space, security, or government works. Just simple things like knowing your zip code, finding your way home after a day of work, or knowing how much an item on McDonalds dollar menu costs. Or being able to locate your own country on a map.

I feel like crap.

I came down with insta-cold on Monday afternoon and its only gone downhill from there. Todays issue is hearing loss and inability to breathe. Hurray.

So in my illness I have carried on life as usual save for missing one day of work on Tuesday. Probably not the worst day of my epic inflictions but the first. Yesterday and today have been doozies compared to the sniffling and wheezing on day one but its an important day to call in sick. The first day is bad because this is new. Somehow the human body forgets how to have a cold after it gets over one and everything shuts down. After that it gets worse but I somehow get used to it and just stop whining and go back to work. Whatever. Also, somehow I think that taking a day off and resting will help. It hasnt helped me in twenty-one years what makes me think it will now?

See, this is how illnesses work in my body. Normally you get cold symptoms and it ruins you for about 3-4 days. Not me. I get cold symptoms for about 3 weeks until I simply say "screw it...im never getting better" and then it gradually improves.

You may be saying "RYAN! go to a doctor! get rest! take medicine!" I am happy to inform you that I have done all of the above save for going to a doctor. All that will prove is that, yes, I am sick and I should get rest and take meds. Every day after work I have been going home and taking the legal dose of Nyquil until I collapse on my pillow around 8:30 PM. Im on a constant regimen of daytime cold and sinus Advil and that seems to keep me upright for the most part.

I feel like the most daunting part of this black plague that is rotting my body is that it leaves me even less to write about than my normal life. Take this entry for example, I just ranted for four paragraphs about my cold. Terribly un interesting but addicting in some sick twisted way. Like an episode of Seinfeld. Its great entertainment and you dont have to think about it. Its there and you take it in and go "uh huh. yep." So there is that. And thats nice. Bonus.

Bethany got me a new turntable so I have been listening to records in my small but growing collection. That has been nice. I also decided to do some photography when I get a chance. I want to start taking shots with a noir theme. I have some ideas in mind and it should be sweet. Im sorry for the lack of photos on here....I promise. Ill put some up soon. I got some of David when the Family came to visit and I am taking some soon.

So I was sitting here contemplating how every foreign traveler's plan to visit the United States on an urgent quest to buy an iPhone, unlocked, without an ATT plan for dirt cheap american prices gets totally deflated when I break the news that its ILLEGAL to have an unlocked iPhone and you can not get one. I was wondering how the utter pain felt in their heart when they hear you can only get a iPhone at ATT or Apple stores WITH A CONTRACT for 2 years of service. Breaking their hearts singlehandedly by forcing them to realize their entire US vacation was totally in vain. While I was mulling this over in my mind and casting a slight smirk over their harvesting deflation I stumbled upon this article on digg.com.

Yep, Tron's long awaited (like...what 25 years?) sequel to the ever underrated movie is underway and going to be more confusing, inconsistent, and weird as the first one.

When it was announced to a huge audience of nerds at this years ComicCon it was taken with mixed reactions. People seemed to approach it with an attitude like "wow seriously? thats so dumb." or on the contrast, "wow seriously? thats so dumb...I HAVE to see that." As the article points out, the name was originally "TR2N" which is pretty lame. Text speak title? Lame. So Disney re-named the coming film "TRZ" which is in no way a step forward.

Personally, I want to see this. I have great memories of seeing the first movie with the old crew. Sitting in Steves living room, eating Chex Mix, and trying to make sense of a movie that thought it knew what it was talking about. I cant wait to re live that excitement and anticipation of making my dreams of seeing live action and wireframe, monochrome animation.

I realize that this post seems very heavy on the sarcasm. Im actually serious though... I really do want to see it when it comes out.

Hi there. So this is whats going to happen. Im writing a blog to talk about my blog and how awesome it is. This is what its come to.

I have updated some things around here. You probably noticed.

I put up a new header...

(I got rid of the annoying blogger nav bar on the top so the blog looks more professional)

Edited my picture and Bio.

Added a "links" section...It basically just links to my photography site right now. Check it out...

Also changed the layout of my past blogs archives. Click the month to see the blogs I wrote that month.

I started "following" other blogs and people have started following mine. This is a function on Blogger to allow you to subscribe to another blog from your main page. This means nothing to a lot of you...but if you have a blogger account, add me. I kept the "reading material" section basically the same but deleted the big corporate blogs that update all the time so more attention could be devoted to my actual friends blogs.

The colors and layout are entirely different and I re-coded the whole site. The colors are cleaner than the black background, I increased text size for easier reading, and made its design match my website.

I also started a new thing where I post music that I have been into lately. I looked for the most compatible player for all sorts of your different computers and browsers... If it doesnt work let me know. Just push the big button that looks like every "play" button and you should hear some music.

I hope you like the blogs new look and tell all of your friends to read it and give me a ton of money. Just kidding. But for real. Seriously.

So now Im back to work...bummer I couldnt get a weekend off...it was just nice having one day off for a change. Its been crazy. I miss Bethany and Ash while they are hanging out in MN but Ill be busy till they get here.

This is a new video from the band Copeland. I have been listening to their new CD a lot and just found the video. It really has a lot of elements that I have found in my favorite bands videos. I like that the video didnt try to do something that wasnt in the cards. It was simple and clean and was visually interesting. Classic and beautiful. Great song too...Favorite on the CD.

I was reading through my old blog (idontlivethereanymore) and remembering the last few weeks of school. What a whirlwind.

Steve, Ben, Mark, Leesh, and Suzie came to visit me in TF and we went to Boston for a tea party. This was right after the final portfolios were handed in and we were busy trying to find an apartment and move.

It was the weekend of Bethanys birthday and we went to a Rilo Kiley concert. Spring was happening and we found some apartments in NY. Sam, Ashley S, Beth, and I drove in to spot out places and hang out in the city.

Shortly after we graduated and moved all our stuff into the new place.

I headed back up north to graduate, go to Marys wedding, and move Beth and Ash to NJ. I hung out with Bethany's family a bit in Turners falls and we did a lot of cool things!

Now things are settled and we have some work, meeting a bunch of new people, and finding a bunch of cool places.

My family is coming for Thanksgiving and Im going to take a couple of senior pictures for David. Any ideas? I have a Dslr, reflector, and flash to work with this week. I just got my camera back too (Bethany has been borrowing it) and Im just pumped to take some photos again and edit them in the little time that I have.

I found this article on Digg showing 50 of the most beautiful tilt shift photos. Tilt shift lenses allow a digital slr to tilt (and shift) the lens to have very very small focus area and look almost "toy model" esque.

These photos are all real even though some may look like a set. Beautiful work.

I also found this sweet application for mac. Unfortunately those with PCs will have to wait a while for the windows version to come out. Its called Poladroid. Its a free app that you can load your jpg photos into and it turns them into digital polaroid lookalikes. The app itself looks sweet. Its a classic polaroid camera that you drag the file onto. A browned polaroid comes out and you "shake" it by clicking it and dragging around with the mouse. When its finished a red mark appears on it and a new polaroid scan is in your pictures folder. It acts exactly like a polaroid camera even to the point of only doing it ten times before you need to quit and restart the software to do it again. (Polaroids only have ten shots in each film pack.)

The last couple days have been cool. Some of the final "shooting" days at the studio are winding down as we get to work more on the post production and shipping part of the operation. I have been taking some film pictures with my Holga, I got some new stands and umbrellas for my light kit (they were needed big time,) and I even changed my room up. It looks like a college dorm.

Last week Bethany, Ashley, Sam, and I had Thanksgiving dinner early at the girls house. They cooked an AMAZING meal and it was a ton of fun. These pictures are Bethany's that I stole from her Facebook. I would have taken some myself but she had my camera.

Nothing is really going on.

Im working in the days and sleeping at the nights. Things are getting crazy as the assistant job is going through the busiest time of the year and early mornings and late nights are common. Yesterday my friends Maria and Jess were in town and I hung out with them in Verb Cafe on Bedford ave. I took some film pictures so you cant see them. Sorry.

So that is basically it. I wish I wish I had more to write about but things are less than exciting right now. More news as it comes.

Yesterday I was able to have a day off for once thanks to my roomate Karinna. Thanks for covering for me!
I spent the day at Bethany's and Ashley's watching movies and eating bagels. Beth wasnt feeling well at all so we just chilled. I went home and cleaned a little and did laundry. It costs as much to drop off and pick up than it does to actually sit there and do my own laundry! Sweet. So im picking it up tonight after work. Im glad it was Halloween because otherwise I would have looked ridiculous carrying 25lb of laundry wrapped up in my bed sheets down broadway to the laundromat. At least yesterday EVERYONE looked ridiculous.

So today Im back to work.

I got a ton of free film so that makes me happy. I have been carrying around my holga and taking street photos.

-I discovered the convenience and fun of "Photoshop Express." Its the basic tools of photoshop and lightroom put onto an intuitive website. It easily uploads a lot of file types and saves them to the online web server or exports to other file formats to your computer. Pretty neat stuff.

Check out mine HERE. The gallery views are especially impressive. 2 Gigs of storage is free. You just have to create an account with adobe. Easy.

-My phone/alarm malfunctioned this morning and I was still up in time to get to work with time to spare. Im glad I have gotten used to waking up pretty early.

Random local news gems such as the bus driver that left a down syndrome kid in the bus alone for like 6 hours when he failed to check if anyone was still there. The dad who left his toddler in the car for hours at a time while he enjoyed lap dances from his wife who works at some strip club. The cop that punched a bike rider off his bike. A random panda rally that turns into a riot. etc.
Being able to get a huge slice of pizza anywhere you go. Nowhere else can you expect to be able to get only a slice.
Not having to drive places and find parking is great.
Taco Cart, Ice cream trucks, breakfast carts, street vendors, etc.
Something to do all the time.
So much internet signal all over the place.
Walking.
The strangest people you will ever see.
Music, movies, art.
Being able to travel to a completely different lifestyle and vibe within minutes.
Any food in Chinatown. Great food for usually under 4 bucks if you know where to go.
A good place that is extra incentive for friends to visit.
A 24 hour bodega on every block.

Hey, Sorry updates have been scarce. I have been busy. I got a second job as a photo assistant to a wedding/school portrait photographer so I am working full time every day. When I get home I almost blog on here and then I end up just going to sleep.

Anyway, Brian and Alex are coming to visit tonight. That should be fun. I am trying to find someone to cover my shift tomorrow, but other than that I have off on Saturday and Sunday to hang out. Its good that my schedule worked the way it did because if it were any other weekend I would be working!

Hello,

I meant to take some photos this weekend but I forgot. I hung out with Beth a lot which was really great. We saw this sweet magician in Washington sq Park who put a coin through a girls hand and into a glass bottle.

Last night Ken from Hallmark and his friend were over and we hung out. Im working today, Probably seeing Jeff later, and then on Thursday Alex and Brian are coming to visit for the weekend! Good week!

Also, I may be starting to work at a wedding studio on my days off....Gonna be busy enough to make up for a whole summer of not having any work.

Otherwise, not much new has happened. Im planing on trying to build a new website for a wedding photography studio that is mine and Bethany's brainchild. If you have any name/design/idea suggestions, let me know. We will be trying to achieve a very trendy stylized style that is the opposite of classic while remaining a delightfully classy aura.

I suppose I should tell you that I officially got a job. Im working at a place called Mikeys Hook Up in DUMBO NY. Its really cool and chill. Kinda like a cross between empire records (from the movie of the same title) and an apple store. We like mac products, ping pong, and rock and roll.

Other than working to catch up on being poor and bored all summer I havnt been up to much. Saw Bethany and Ashley the other day. (Beth and I have sort of conflicting schedules so its kinda hard to find a day where we are both off work.) I think Im going to try to go over there tomorrow for the VP debates because they have a TV and I do not.

Apple is secretively working on something new to hopefully "wow" everyone on October 14th. I can picture Steve Jobs in his trendy California home rubbing his hands together perched in a rich leather chair staring at the new products placed delicately on a black satin cloth. Apple sure is taking its time to make something that truly breaks new ground in a real way. For the last few years they seem to have just updated old designs and created various miscellaneous products that dont appeal to the general public. There is a lot of speculation and mystery about what will be released conveniently right before the Christmas shopping extravaganza. Knowing the Apple marketing group they would wait till now to unveil something that is geared more towards the consumer market. Something to buy for Christmas. This eliminates major changes to the pro line.

Since the new iPods have just come out Im almost certain nothing will be done to them. Possibly a new update of software that allows the iPod classic to have the same functionality as the new nanos and touches. At the most.

There are rumors of a Macbook update. Making the current models more in tune with their newer aluminum and black, curved color and shape scheme. I think this is a good possibility. The laptops are the only part of all the products that are still black or white plastic. I feel like one of the smaller parts of the announcement will be minor cosmetic changes while the overall usability of existing functions will improve. Take a look at the iPhone and the iPod touch. If the touch screen technology that Apple uses was applied as a control function for the laptops it would increase productivity and create almost unlimited control function. Imagine using a program, say a game, that needs to be controlled with something other than a mouse or a keyboard. There could be user functions displayed on the touch pad. There could be "digital" buttons added on the sides of the control.

I am also wondering if they will do something with some underlooked products. 1. The long neglected appleTV. If you dont know, appleTV is a device that connects to your TV and transmits content from your computer wirelessly to the screen. Ex: you use the apple remote to watch movies or listen to music that is on your computer. Not a lot of people have invested in the idea because, in my opinion, its not a very good one.

2. Airport extreme. This is a product that acts as a hub for wireless internet and networking. It creates a network for all the computers in the house, gives them internet, and can support a printer or external hard drive so everyone has access to it.

3. Time Capsule. Its basically the same principal as Airport extreme except it has a hard drive built in.

My proposal would be to basically combine these 3 different products into one awesome (and low priced) contraption.

Apple TV + Airport Extreme + Time Capsule = New awesome shiny thing.

I mean really....look at them. They all even look the same. Why purchase three different products that look the same and do kinda the same things? Can you imagine next to the computer having a big ol stack of these things? I am wondering if they will do something like this for convenience and marketing (following their pattern of slightly changing products and calling it new.

I suppose we will see... Apple always hides their new products before they are released so nobody knows until EVERYBODY knows so there are always rumors going around about whats new but its rarely very accurate. Everyone has been speculating about an Apple tablet computer for years but that has not surfaced yet. Then again, with iPhones, iPod Touch, and the macbook Air why would you want a tablet anyway.

I started this blog this morning and now, at the end of the day, after wall street had the worst day ever and we may be plummeting into what could be a second great depression it seems less important but nonetheless these are my ideas.

Well, Im sorry these updates have been infrequent. The internet around here has been off and on and usually its bad enough that I dont even want to TRY to update stuff.

I have been busy. I worked a 10 hour shift at a computer store yesterday. I think this might turn into a job of sorts. They are going to have me work a little bit more and let me know if they want to hire me. Im getting paid though...its not just free work like every other time I tried to find work this summer.

I got to go to a Hoodies concert when they were in NYC on their tour. Thanks Dan for the tickets!

The show was great and they played a lot of new songs. I think they are coming back here sometime soon so it will be cool to see em again.

Yesterday, after I got out of work, I went to midtown and hung out with my cousin, Allison. Bethany joined us later and we hung out and talked for a while. It was really cool to be able to see her. Wow! I have only been in the city for the summer and I have already seen so many people from Rochester.

Its getting cooler here. Hoodie and pants weather. I need to get some cash and get a scarf from some street vendor or something. So I am just sitting around today...Finishing some things I need to get done and taking a break from worrying and stressing over the money crisis (mine and the governments.)

We watched Boondock Saints this morning which is one of my absolute favorites.

I went to see about another job today in a studio.

I met Bethany this morning for a walk around

she went to work.

It was really chilly out today! Around 65 and

overcast in the city.

Tonight Ashely came over and we hung out on the roof

New Changes, Wide Angles, and a few ads

Last night we had a party for our roomate Toni. We had a couple people over, enjoyed some video games, photos, and music as we celebrated. WIll brought over a 10mm wide angle lens which I promptly borrowed and played with.

Speaking of rearranging, Im sure you noticed the new look to the blog. I am hoping it will be more aesthetically pleasing and easier to navigate. Also, you may notice there are ads all over this thing now. There should be a banner ad at the bottom of the page. Another on the right hand side. These are there so I can make money from google. Yep, I can get paid to make this blog. And I sure as heck am trying to. So if you could be a sport, you can do three things to help me out.

1. Comment. It really makes a difference. Even if you just say something like "oh i like the one of beth on the chair" or "this is dumb." Anything helps. Right now, it looks to the blogging community and the advertisers that 3 people read this blog. More comments = more publicity on blogger = more and better ads = more money and more readers. This is my goal.

2. Click the ads every once and a while. They are customized by Google to display things YOU are interested in and have searched for recently online. So YOU are really making the ads into things YOU want to see. They arent that bad and it gives me more money from Google and a better shot at having a widely read blog.

3. Tell friends to read this. Its not tough to remember. 3 blocks from J (dot) blogspot (dot) com. More readers = better.

Help making this thing better is really good. If you have any suggestions or feedback on the new layout would be awesome. Comments (even just to say "hey. i read your blog") would be awesome as well.

Hello folks.

Yesterday was pretty cool.

I met Bethany after she got out of work in midtown and we got on a train to hang out at central park near 72nd. We watched rowboats go by and talked. We found the bridge and pond that the famous sailboat scene of Stewart Little was filmed. We even stumbled on the set of Ugly Betty and were walking around near Betty and some other main characters.

After a quick bite to eat we went to see the Broadway production A Tale of Two Cities. My cousin Kevin is in it and was able to grab a couple free tickets for us! It was an awesome show and a good "first-broadway-experience" for me. Kevin did great as usual and it was really cool to be able to go. Afterwards we hung out with him for a bit and went home. Thanks again Kev!

Today I had an interview with Kiddie Kandids in the huge Babies R Us in Union Sq. I thought it would be a retail position but it was an interview for manager! So that would be a cool gig to have! Im hoping it works in my favor!

I have been pretty tired today for some reason... I dont know why.

I have this weird bite on the back of my leg. Sam says its probably from a spider. He knows these things because he is from Oklahoma. Its kinda going away so I hope that isnt a disaster.

Also! Im pretty pumped about next week because Dan, the singer for Rochester band "The Hoodies," gave me some free tickets to the show they are having in NYC next week! Sweet! I miss seeing those guys live. Thanks Dan!

EDIT: I got another call from the photo place in babies-r-us in union square who are having an open interview this thursday. So if the first two jobs dont work out I at least have another round of interviewing to look forward to! Also, our gas is shut off? So we dont have a stove or hot water. Sweet. Oh. And the weather report said it wasnt supposed to rain till later today. so I left my laundry on the line overnight. Of course its raining when I got up. Sweet.

Anyway. There is an Apple conference today where they release new products. Probably iPods. In case you were wondering...I like to keep you posted on these things.

I got a job offer from a company who found my resume on Craigslist. I had an interview on Saturday and I feel that it went well. They seemed to really like me and I liked them too. It would be a pretty good job and I really hope I get it. Ironic thing is that its in Hoboken NJ. Bethany and Ashley live there. A few blocks from this place. So its a little Ironic that I live in Brooklyn...and if I get this job I have to go across Manhattan to go to work...a few blocks from Bethany. If she is working I will barely see her though. We will see how things work out.

I have another interview tomorrow afternoon and I wish that was today. I have nothing to do but look for more work in case these two interviews don't work out. Im just getting so restless. And Broke.

Katelynne is visiting the girls in Hoboken for a few days so it was really fun to hang out with her again. She went to Hallmark with us and lived with the girls.

Today was alright. I looked for jobs again.

I got an email from a computer/photography/printing retail store who saw my resume posted online and wanted to get to know me and possible offer me a retail position.

I also talked to a wedding/portrait studio and they want to interview me next week.

I talked to Ben and Brian and my mom today so that was cool. For a long time too!

I also called my old instructor from hallmark today. David Langley. He is one of my main mentors and an incredible photographer. He did everything before you could just photoshop it. His creativity and ability to get a job done are astounding. Check out his website HERE. Please check out his photos. They are awesome.

Speaking of Hallmark, a new class started today! Thats cool I guess.

Pancakes and bacon for dinner again. I have been doing the whole "breakfast for dinner" deal a lot lately.

OH HEY! Big news, I know this post is really random...But I updated my website today.

I added a new tab at the top. In addition to the other sections, there is now a "wedding" section. I even put music to it! Check it out and let me know if it works. I need to test the music part on different browsers and operating systems. Let me know if there is any problem.

Sorry it has been a while since my last blog. I have a hard time updating this thing when there is nothing to do. I have been doing nothing the last couple weeks besides editing wedding photos (which is done now) and browsing for other jobs. I was also waiting to hear on the job I applied for. I had high hopes for it and they really liked me...but I didnt get the job.

So...today Im hanging out with the girls in Hoboken. Later we are going to a baseball game in Staten Island. I figure I might as well do something while Im doing nothing.

Here's to another month of living in a city that has no work.

Bethany planned this AWESOME date yesterday! It was really fun. First we went to Strawberry Fields in Central Park. We listened to old hippies play Beatles songs and we ate strawberries. Next we went to this sweet fountain and then on to the Central Park Zoo! The night ended with a lovely dinner at her place. Here are some pictures.

Hey!

Anberlin has a couple new singles out from the new album! You can listen to them HERE.

They sound pretty good. The music seems pretty generic and I hope they have some different sounding tracks on the record. They just signed onto a major label so they are going to be VERY promoted. Going on headlining tours with very well known bands as supporting acts, placing songs in the next Rock Band game, etc. They are coming to NYC in the fall and hopefully Ill be making money to see them.

I hear back about that job soon. It would be so cool. Im trying not to get my hopes up but I am really excited/hoping for it.

The other night was Sams birthday! We stayed up all night hanging out and watching the sun set/rise.

An area of photography that I am interested in is the panorama photography. Its done by taking a lot of pictures in a 360 degree sphere and putting them together on the computer. It gives a realistic feel of standing somewhere and looking around. Thomas Finchum, an American diver, put this online. A view from the diving board at the 08 Olympics! Check it out!
